What did your mother say?

Post by Pat on Mon Nov 02, 2009 5:49 am

A Bone to Pick: (someone who wants to discuss a disagreement)

An Axe to Grind: (Someone who has a hidden motive. This phrase is said to
have originated from Benjamin Franklin who told a story about a devious man who
asked how a grinding wheel worked. He ended up walking away with his axe
sharpened free of charge)

A bad apple spoils the whole barrel: (one corrupt person can cause all the
others to go bad if you don’t remove the bad one)

At sea: (lost or not understanding something)

Bad Egg: (Someone who was not a good person)

Barking at a knot: (meaning that your efforts were as useless as a dog
barking at a knot.)

Bee in your bonnet: (To have an idea that won’t let loose)

Been through the mill: (had a rough time of it)

Between hay and grass: (Not a child or an adult)

Blinky: (Between sweet and sour…as in milk)

Calaboose (a jail)

Cattywampus: (Something that sits crooked such as a piece of furniture
sitting at an angle)

Dicker (To barter or trade)

Feather In Your Cap: (to accomplish a goal…this came from years ago in
wartime when warriors might receive a feather they would put in their cap for
defeating an enemy)

My friend's grannie used a lot of sayings such as: "I'll fix your little red wagon", or "Ill clip your wings". As a child, I had no idea what the heck this ole lady was talking about. I don't remember my parents saying too many things like that except for mom who use to say" Elbows off the table Mabel". Well shoot my name wasn't Mabel. No wonder I'm so confused today.

I have heard most all of them before! And a few others as well! Like the classic:

Wait till your Father gets home!!! (your in BIG trouble then)

I will yank a knot in your tail ( spanking is approaching so better stop and behave)

My Grandmothers favorite was:

"My Stars & Blue Garters! ( She was excited & astounded all at the same time)

Thanks for bringing back some great memories Pat! Enjoyed it!

Oh and always wear clean underwear in case you get in an accident. My mom's only concern was I had clean underwear on. Geez.

I heard the one about clean underwear and think of it every time I put my underwear on!

And also the one that it was hurting them more than me! (Not)

OHHHHHHHHH I love some the old time expressions..One of the funniest things I heard growing up was " don't have brains to pour pee out of a boot" Ha ha ha..why would anyone pee in a boot? I couldn't never figure out if you where smart enough you wouldn't pee in a boot anyway..lol.

I was raised by my father ...his favorite saying was ... “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” (and to this day I live by this rule)

another aas we grew to teens & grumbled about how stern he was was ... “Don’t worry, I’ll pack up the rest of your things and send them to your new address.”

WOW...THOSE BRING BACK SO MANY GOOD MEMORIES...SIGH! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THEM.

THE BEST PART IS, WE BECOME PARENTS AND FIND OURSELVES REPEATING THEM TO OUR OWN KIDS.

I heard "pretty soon we'll be living in the poor house". I sure as heck didn't want to live there...wherever it was.

Another oldie but a goodie.."You've bite off more than you can chew" meaning..you taken on too many task at one time..or gotten into a situation you couldn't get out of easy. Seems that I have gotten myself into that some times..lol. OHHHHHH howabout..."your eyes are bigger than your belly" I heard that a lot when I was a kid..I always knew that I had taken more than I could eat..and my parents didn't approve of it..most of it was because no matter what was put in front of me as a kid..I couldn't finish..I was a very very skinny kid..I never meant to have such big eyes..lol
